I’m in the process of moving house, so I’ve decided to take a break from posting to this site. I’ll return once I’m settled in.
If you’re reading this, Merry Christmas to you, I hope you have a fab one. Thank you for your support throughout 2016, whilst I mostly maintain this blog for myself, it is nice to know that others are reading my piffle too. My gift to you this year is … the promise of another year’s worth of blogging piffle. No need to thank me, you’re most welcome.
Merry Christmas :)
“Redesigning your blog” in 2016 is an anachronism. Like tweaking your Gopher presence or upgrading your ham radio, even talking about blogging feels like a throwback — an exercise in nostalgia for an independent web whose time has passed.
Blogging is so retro!
But there a few reasons why I’m sad about the decline of independent blogging, and why I think they’re still worth fighting for.
Ultimately, it comes down to two things: ownership and control.
Medium is on its way to becoming the consensus platform for writing on the web. if you’re not sure you’re going to be blogging regularly, the default place to put your writing is Medium, rather than starting a blog on Tumblr or WordPress.com, for example.
A post from Dave Winer regarding the dominance of Medium and the importance of protecting the open web. Personally, it has never crossed my mind to use Medium, but I think I can understand the appeal. Interesting that Dave syndicates his own content to Medium.
My blog is back, well, sort of. I decided that I needed a fresh start, so I performed a complete reset and dropped my existing posts. Sorry about that, but it’s not like I’ve deleted anything of historical importance, at least I don’t think I have. Hmm.
