Freetard faeries & pragmatic pixies

About 2 weeks ago, I happily destroyed the virtual bridge between my Identi.ca and Twitter accounts. I have now rebuilt it, and I have built an additional bridge from Twitter to Facebook.

What can I say, sometimes I tend to flip-flop with my decisions — probably more so when it involves the ongoing battle in my head between the little freetard faeries and pragmatic pixies.

I think it might help if I try and define my personal stance about such matters in a single sentence. So, whenever somebody asks, or whenever I get carried away, I should refer back to this post and repeat:

I have a preference for free/libre software and services, I use and advocate them whenever possible, but I am also a pragmatist.

In semi-related flip-flop news, I have also switched my site’s feed from Atom to RSS format. This is not in anyway related to faeries or pixies and I apologise in advance if I have flooded any aggregators or planets. :/

but I am also a pragmatist

What about not using “WordPress” or “Drupal” for your blog, and instead reinventing the wheel? I think you forgot to mention your creative/mad scientist(beeker) side “Whird” kicks a$$ BTW and your whird users reconcile you back to pragmatism by using it. :P

But the real question remains…What did you have for breakfast!!!??? ;P

Love your work man, like many I’m greatful. Best wishes in the future #!

@Will, what can I say, I like to experiment. Meep, meep! :D

Seriously though, I would use WordPress, but every time I take a look at it, I start quivering. If I am going to work with spaghetti code, it might as well be my own spaghetti code — at least I have a rough idea of what it does. ;)

@factotum218, I had yoghurt, I always have yoghurt for breakfast — well, mostly always :P Anyhow, thanks for your kind words, I am pleased you are enjoying #!

I share your view, though I would definitely not call myself pragmatic. :P Sure I’d love to be all free and open source but well I’m no RMS. And when it comes to Twitter and Identi.ca, it is like two halves of my social life online and they overlap very little and I’d like to keep them both.

@Hanna, I know what you mean about the virtual social overlaps. In my case, I do not think any of my meatspace friends or family [discounting bobobex] use Twitter, and they definitely do not use Identi.ca, but many of them use Facebook. Until now, I have tried to keep Facebook separated from the other online services that I use, but over the past week or so, I came to the conclusion there is no real reason for me not to subject my Facebook friends to same inane drivel I push out to everyone else. :D

haha! well it was worth a try. The only reason my bridge is still severed is because I don’t know anyone on twitter! I did push a status there with my kindle the other day when I finished a book, though….

mostly everyone I know personally uses facebook.

free software is great, but sometimes it is not the best thing to use.

    btw whird looks nice!

Sooo… not just Twitter, but Facebook as well now? I seem to remember saying on identi.ca that you should reconsider before removing Twitter if you have projects to share. ^^ If I were in your shoes, i’d do the same. However i’m not, so my Twitter remains closed and I am still a proud member of http://identi.ca/group/twitterfree :)

@jrobb, looks can be deceiving ;)

@richs-lxh, yes, I believe you also said,

You can’t fight the system from outside the system.

Well, being a lover, not a fighter, I am not really interested in fighting the system, but I am totally interested in working with it — it appears that modern culture does apply to me after all. :)

    There’s nothing like a good flip-flop. I just wish I could control mine a little better :-)

Is Twitter evil? Like, in the way Facebook seems to be devoted to selling users’ private data to advertisers?
